Renting a sunbed on the beach, lifeguard on duty

It’s the height of summer, and you’re heading to the beach. Should you rent a sunbed or just sit on a towel? As a Dutch person and a frequent visitor to Terschelling, I initially had to get used to the Italian way of going to the beach, but now I’ve fully embraced it—and I love it!

Our favorite spot is Vallecrosia, right next to Ventimiglia. Here, you’ll find both a free beach (spiaggia libera) and various beach clubs where you can rent sunbeds. On the spiaggia libera, it’s often impossible to sit without an umbrella, as the sun is scorching in July and August. So we always opt for a sunbed!

Sunbeds come in pairs with an umbrella in the middle. You can rent them for a half-day (morning or afternoon) or the entire day. You set up all your belongings and have the option to order food and drinks (not mandatory, but of course, you can’t have a full picnic with your own packed lunch). And there’s a lifeguard on duty all day! Even though you always keep an eye on your kids yourself, it gives you an extra sense of safety. I even once saw the lifeguard assisting an elderly lady into the sea—such a kind gesture.

In July, it’s relatively quiet, and you can get a sunbed at any time of the day. From August 1st, however, Italians start their holidays, and it gets much busier. Be sure to arrive early! Many Italians head to the spiaggia libera fully equipped (with an umbrella) and bring their own (often very elaborate) lunch.

Parking in Vallecrosia is quite manageable, especially in July. There’s usually space near the beach, or otherwise just before you reach the promenade. You can easily use the EasyPark app. Enjoy!
